Annie's Song

Please excuse my long absence in updating my blog. Over the past two months, we have traveled to California, Oregon and Washington State as well as Beijing, and have taken 7 flights and one road-trip in the process. My mother accompanied Jameson and I back to Shanghai where she stayed with us for over two weeks. While my mom was here, my fabulous Aunt Margaret and cousin “Funnie-Vonnie” (so Jameson has named her) also visited Shanghai. I told them that I could not imagine letting them fly all the way to China without seeing the Great Wall, Forbidden City and (my favorite in Beijing) the Summer Palace.

I have a thumb-drive full of photos, but have been lacking the time and energy to blog, but I promise to change that now. My biggest draw of energy (and the most exciting one) is that I am 13 weeks pregnant! We found out that I am pregnant on the second day of our trip home in September. It was a brilliant blessing to be able to share our news with family and friends in person. I was not, however, prepared to broadcast my pregnancy over the Internet until I was close to or in the second trimester where the odds of miscarriage are much lower.

This afternoon I had my second ultra-sound with Dr. Kong at World Path Clinic. During our ultra-sound, I could see little baby Devey kicking around and I could hear the baby’s perfect little heartbeat while a slightly cheesy recording of John Denver's  “Annie’s Song”
played in the background. In spite of the cheesy factor, the song brought tears to my eyes as I could picture my mother and father singing together in perfect harmony as they did back in my childhood. Seeing our large baby, so I am told, bouncing around “filled up my senses” in every way imaginable.

In case some of you are thinking, but are afraid to say, “are you crazy? You can’t give birth in China!” please put your minds at ease.  In spite of the fact that this pregnancy is technically high-risk because of my spine issues, my doctor has safely delivered 7 children whom I know and whose mothers were kept healthy and happy in the process. This beautiful miracle of ours may have been made in China, but we do not yet know if it will be born in China. If I do deliver here, my c-section will be scheduled for May 20th.

Between now and May, I have much to do! I promise to resume regular blogging, starting with photos of our trip home as well as our trip to Beijing. This Saturday I have the privilege of performing at the Community Center Shanghai Annual Gala which takes place at the renowned Peace Hotel on the Bund. To read more about the performance and purchase tickets click here.

The event is a 1920’s theme called “All That Jazz” and I have a tailor working on a flapper costume, which will hopefully fit me at three months pregnant. I will be sure to post photos of the event!
