"How you doin'?"

Jim’s first day at work was my first day on my own in Shanghai. Jameson had not slept for more than 6 hours at a time since we left the States and our Chinese mattress feels more like a box spring, so sleep was completely out of my grasp. Jameson woke up at 6:00 AM and did not take a nap all day. At the time, we did not have any telephone or Internet access. I felt completely isolated and exhausted all day. When Jim came home after his 14-hour workday, I was a mess.

The next morning I began writing a gratitude list. I filled a page of my journal with things that I was grateful for and I have continued to do so every morning since last Monday. It has really helped me appreciate the huge blessings we have in our lives.

My gratitude list often includes fresh croissants, heat (did I mentioned that it snowed here on Tuesday?) and an indoor play area where Jameson and I go almost every day.  Jameson and I love visiting “E-Kids Island” because it is warm, clean, fun and….

A great place to meet the Ladies!

Watch your things, but only momentarily

Jeepers creepers, where’d you get them peepers?

So how are we doing in China?  It has not been easy, but now that we are feeling settled and making friends, Shanghai feels more like home.   Our home in Pleasant Hill, our friends and our family are missed daily, but we enjoy the new things that Shanghai has to offer.   Jameson is feeling more at ease here as well.  As you can see he is making friends quite easily!

Lori, I have had you in my thoughts and prayers during this transition time to Shanghai. So fun to read your blog and see the pictures of Jameson. I feel like I know how to pray for you more specifically. Tues. evenings I attend the Beth Moore Daniel study and Stephanie is a part of our group. I didn't realize it had worked out for she and Dustin to stay in your PH home. God is good! Whenever you feel lonely, remember you are not forgotten here in CA. I am challenged and may borrow your idea of a gratitude list. It's hard to be unhappy when we start recalling all the blessings God showers upon us! Love all your darling family. Marion

Dear Marion, It warms my heart to read your comment and feel so loved and cared for. We are so blessed that it worked out to have Dustin and Steph live in our house and caring for Lady. I try not to think of home too much as I do not want to get homesick, but when I do, I know that our home is in good hands. Thanks for your prayers. We hope to find the right church body soon as that will definitely help with any loneliness. Thank you for not forgetting us in California! I love writing gratitude lists. Even at my darkest hours it is always possible to fill a page with blessings. God bless, Lori

HI Lori, Cute, cute, cute little kid you have there. All new things take adjustment. You're doing just fine. Give yourself a break. And the journaling is a wonderful way to help us remember all God's blessings. You are blessed. Love, Barbara

Hi Barbara, We love our cute little guy. He gets so much attention here because of his big eyes and long lashes. You're right, I need to give myself a break and remember that it takes time to adjust. Some days are harder than others. For instance right now, my best friend is being induced and I do not get to be there to meet her little one. But, one year will fly by and I know our experiences here will be life-changing! Love you, Lori:love:

Your post brought tears to my eyes. I feel the pain of those mattresses and the children not sleeping with the time change. It took us almost 3 weeks...hang in there! You all are in our thoughts and prayers! I love the how friendly Jameson is! The list of God's Blessing is great! That is something we all should do and you have spurred me on to do so as well! Take care! Try to rest when you can and don't expect to much from yourself for a while..it will come! Love you, Lisa
